NOSE VINES

The dream begins with my waking up unable to breathe through my nose. Thinking that I'm simply stuffed up, I bring up my hand to run the bridge of my nose, and I try to get back to sleep.

Still unable to breathe through my nose, I rub my nostrils in an attempt to stir something loose. In doing so, I notice that I feel something, something quite substantial, in my nose. Reaching down further, I feel that there's something long and rather stiff coming from inside my nose.

I run to the bathroom mirror to see what it is, and I see two vines growing out my nose, one out of each nostril. The first response I have is to yank them out. In doing so, I yank the whole of my head. Apparently, these vines are rooted in my head, so when I pull them, I pull myself.

Instinct number two is to cut them out. I go for my X-Acto box and break out the smallest blade. Slowly and gently, I cut along the inside of my right nostril. Once all the way around, the vine falls out. Just as I'm about finished with the left side, I see in the mirror that the right one's beginning to grow back again.

And therein lies the cycle. No matter how fast I cut, the vines just grow back faster and stronger ech time. And that's where I dream ends, my cutting this relentless vegetation out of my head.
